Loosen up with Lilacs 🌿 How to Paint Pretty Flowers with Oil on Paper
Loosen up your brushstrokes with this beginner friendly oil painting tutorial starring my favourite spring flowers that are just so unapologetically pretty...lilacs! In this next instalment in my Botanical Sketchbook series of flowers, I'll be teaching you how to paint some lovely, loose lilacs using oil. I'm using oil paints on paper, but you can use any medium you want, on any surface you'd like. Just modify the instructions accordingly; if you're painting on a canvas instead of paper, you won't be doing the same kind of acrylic ink tone and writing, and if you're painting in acrylic you'll need to softly blend the colours on the palette instead of the paper, since the dry time is so fast.
Painting flowers is one of my great joys, and if you enjoyed this tutorial and are an acrylic painter, I have something just for you. I've developed a fully comprehensive course called "Painting Flowers in Acrylic" that will take you through 23 lessons, for a total of 7.5 hours of instruction. You can use code UA-cam25 and take $25 off the purchase price (regularly $149CAD, now $124CAD). You can find the course and its full description here: courses.mariannevanderdussen.com/offers/sTGLNjHa

Your artwork is very good but I can't see the reason why you get yourself into that much trouble in order to paint with acrylics into a sketchbook. Acrylics initial purpose was to be a long lasting and faster drying alternative of oil paints, for painting on non absorbent surfaces. Not to paint finished paintings on paper. It can be done but it is not the most optimal and straight forward way to use acrylics.

I did a lilac painting recently, trying out a new style. This video reminds me of the lily of the valley I painted following your journal painting last year, which I followed with one of hollyhocks, which I never fully finished. I wanted to do a third to hang together in my home, and I think the lilacs are a great idea! So thanks for the inspiration to finish these!

I have been using "Blue RIDGE MT" oil paints. seems a number of well known artist like the paints. better than some of the old masters. I just started, some artist list colors hard to get ,a,quinacridone majenta, they like the cremnite white to give winter scenery that more misty look with a bit of yellow to get a glow, of light . I have not tried to paint a winter scenery yet. may do it when I do some Canadian Geese., or crossbills. They use this white instead of titanium , because titanium can be a bit too bright I love lilacs Miss Kim Japanese smaller in size. and blooms later, but think it has a stronger lingering on the air smell , Did find in North USA , WI it is susceptible to disease/ insect.I made mistake too dark when using Acrylic. instead of oil. but found I could use "DOLLAR TREE" stain remover, for rugs, and material. GREAT for a $1.25 . However did not try with oil, except to get OIL spells while cooking and WORKS wonders, no lightening of the material , and stain came out,. I am a detail person. To do the birds, and animals strange find easier to do , but the detail on flowers and their leaves takes longer. Maybe because each leaf is different and due to light and shadow. colors change ENJOYED your Tutorial.

Your work is amazing :D I started my own sketchbook with acrylic paint, but I have a problem, when I finished my painting and waited a few days for my paint to dry, after that I closed my sketchbook and when I opened it again the paint stuck to the other page and part of my painting was destroyed u u. how can I avoid that? let it dry longer?

    • @MarianneVanderDussen

Great question! This is actually a comment that I often get, but haven't actually experienced. I think it's because I'm painting on a really thick paper that absorbs the paint well, and maybe the cold press paper keeps it from getting too sticky. I'm actually going to troubleshoot this and see if I can offer some solutions in a future video!!!
